Chinese Cyber Military Unit Suspected In Hacking U.S Companies & Agencies
A Chinese Military unit is responsible for cyberattacks which have resulted in billions of dollars of intellectual property damage from ‘economic cyber espionage.’ Unit 61398 is based off of Shanghai, where officials believe that a wide range of attacks originated from a single building. According to Reuters, the building is described as the following:
The 12-storey building, which houses the unit, sits in an unassuming residential area and is surrounded by a wall adorned with military propaganda photos and slogans; outside the gate a sign warns members of the public they are in a restricted military area and should not take pictures.
Chinese officials deny the use of cyberattacks, instead claiming that the U.S. is responsible for the majority of cyberattacks in China. ”Of the above mentioned Internet hacking attacks, attacks originating from the United States rank first.” Said Hong Lei, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. U.S. Government officials are expected to make a statement regarding the attacks sometime this week.
